The Next Gen European Risk Council Digs Deeper into Foresight

FERMA’s Next Generation of Risk Professionals Visits Brussels Again

The FERMA office in Brussels had the pleasure of welcoming its young and motivated risk professionals on 3 and 4 September 2026.

After a few busy months working independently and collaboratively online – building on their thinking and work processes, and elaborating further on the knowledge and tools gained during the first gathering in May (including the butterfly diagram methodology) – the time had come to take the next steps.

Foresight has become the backbone of the Council’s work. Rather than predicting the future, it is about preparing for it – exploring multiple plausible scenarios, identifying weak signals, and understanding the interactions between major systemic trends to anticipate change rather than simply react to it. For the Next Gen European Risk Council, it is something that helps the group make sense of the complex, interconnected risks that will shape Europe’s industries in the years ahead.

Before heading to Brussels, the group took part in an online Stress Testing Training delivered by Luc Neuberg, founding partner of Fair Cost Index and Chairman of the Board of ALRiM. The session equipped the group with yet another practical tool used in the risk management environment, adding stress testing to their basket of available methodologies.

And the back-in-the-room moment came. The meeting at the FERMA office was a moment to gather all the work done so far, take further decisions, and structure and plan the months ahead – with the FERMA Forum 2026 in Rotterdam firmly on the horizon.

The room was not short on lively discussions, challenging thoughts, and ideas. Members reflected on where they want the project to lead, what challenges they want to address further, and what impact they want to make – arriving with months of work behind them and leaving with a sharper sense of direction and purpose ahead.

The group is ready to ask the difficult questions about what lies ahead in the years to come.

What comes next

With two in-person meetings now behind them, the Next Gen European Risk Council is turning its attention to Rotterdam. Members will take the stage at the FERMA Forum 2026 on 4 – 6 October during a dedicated workshop, an opportunity to share what’s on their minds with the wider risk management community.
